World Breastfeeding Week: Why It Matters

Ask any new mom and they’ll give you a different account of their breastfeeding journey. Moral of the story? No two experiences are alike. There’s beauty in knowing that we’re all on our own personal journey when it comes to establishing a bond with our little one.

Breast, pump, bottle, or formula. It’s totally up to you, mama. This is a judgement free zone. This week, however, we’re taking a moment to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week (WBFW) and the important advantages that policymakers have brought to new mamas the world over.

What began as a global campaign to raise awareness for breastfeeding has transformed into a universal platform that galvanizes family-friendly initiatives to help promote breastfeeding and bonding with baby. Things like a minimum maternity leave, breastfeeding breaks at work, and paid paternity leave that encourages shared responsibility. (Gotta love that).

How do new mamas benefit from nursing? For one, breastfeeding promotes the heath of mamas and babies alike. Nursing reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Disease prevention aside, we’ve found that it’s one of the sweetest bonds you can create with your baby.

Truth be told, most new moms will tell you they have a love/hate relationship with breastfeeding. And we’re here to tell you that it’s totally normal. It’s not always, easy. It can be painful. (Enter cracked nipples). It requires patience and practice. The good news? There’s support out there! We’ve heard amazing success stories about lactation consultants. Not to mention, the sage advice that fellow mamas and family members can provide. Don’t be afraid to ask around.

Another form of support? Modern nursing staples designed with breastfeeding in mind. Here at BLANQI, we’ve deliberately designed feeding-friendly tanks with pull-down and lift-up access, plus, high waisted leggings for discreet, postpartum tummy coverage. As two moms who’ve breastfed eight kids between us, we know how important it is to feel comfortable and secure.

Lastly, no matter how you feed your little one, know that you’re doing an amazing job. Every journey is different. No matter what your routine looks like, we’ll support you every step of the way.
